Charlton remain Top of League One thanks to a convincing victory over Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park this afternoon.

An unchanged team took to the field for the fifth game of the season and it seems that Phil Parkinson’s confidence in his strongest eleven is reaping the rewards.

In play reminiscent of their previous four fixtures Charlton took to the field and proceeded to control the pace of the game, early shots from Jonjo Shelvey and Deon Burton the most notable actions of the first twenty minutes.

As the twenty minute mark passed however, the Addicks turned up the heat, and they were quickly rewarded, Lloyd Sam leaping just inside the penalty area to get his head onto a Jonjo Shelvey cross and find the back of the net on 23 minutes. 1 – 0 to Charlton.

Tranmere restarted the game but Charlton quickly recovered the ball and returned to the attack immediately. Jose Semedo finding himself inside the penalty box, drilled the ball into the bottom right corner. 2 – 0 after 25 minutes,

Miguel Llera nearly made the game 3 – 0 on 28 minutes with a free kick but Tranmere striker Terry Gornell got the block in.

Half time Charlton 2 – Tranmere 0

The 2nd half began and Charlton continued their sustained pressure, reaping the rewards on 48 minutes as Kelly Youga crossed the ball into the six yard box and Lloyd Sam found his second goal of the game.

Charlton’s fourth really summed up Tranmere’s day; Nicky Bailey dribbled down the left wing, cut back inside and released a right foot cross into the box. The cross missed everyone but didn’t miss the goal, finding itself resting in the far corner to put the game to 4 -0.

With 60% of possession throughout the game and a total of 12 shots for the Addicks in comparison to 6 shots for Tranmere, Charlton leave Merseyside as deserved victors.

League leaders Charlton now face two tough home ties starting with Brentford next Saturday in their first fixture this season to be broadcast live on Sky Sports, the week after Alan Pardew’s Southampton will be the visitors to The Valley, both sides looking to get a result against the team to beat in League One, Charlton Athletic.

Come on you Addicks!
