Dimitar Berbatov fired a superb brace to help Tottenham produce a five-star display at White Hart Lane and inflict yet more misery on London rivals Charlton.

Berbatov is proving to be one of more astute buys of the summer following his £10.9million move from Bayer Leverkusen during the summer.

The Bulgarian was simply unstoppable for the Charlton defence and could prove one of the key factors in helping Spurs achieve major success this season.

Charlton boss Les Reed must be wondering what he has let himself in for after taking over the managerial reins from Iain Dowie.

Teemu Tainio, Steed Malbranque and Jermain Defoe ensured Charlton remain in the bottom three and are struggling to retain their Premiership status.

Berbatov almost continued his impressive goalscoring streak after just three minutes when he rose the highest to meet a cross from Tom Huddlestone, but his header flew just over the bar.

Despite their lowly position in the table Charlton were determined to get something from this London derby and Amady Faye came close on 17 minutes, when his 25-yard volley flew just past the post.

Tottenham had strong claims for a penalty turned down on 26 minutes, when Michael Dawson appeared to be brought down by Faye, but referee Mike Dean waved for play to continue.

The home side finally managed to break the deadlock on 31 minutes when Berbatov grabbed his eighth goal of the season.

Huddlestone picked out Aaron Lennon who laid a superb ball into the path of Berbatov, who made no mistake sliding the ball past Scott Carson.

And things got even better for Spurs when Tainio added a second just two minutes later.

Lennon's cross into the box was headed away by Talal El Karkouri. The ball fell to Tainio on the edge of the box and his fierce drive deceived Carson in the Charlton goal and flew into the back of the net.

Charlton managed to claw their way back into the game on 41 minutes. Andy Reid burst away down the left before seeing his cross turned past his own keeper by Dawson.

Paul Robinson managed to get a hand to the ball, but it was not enough to see it crossing over the line.

Defoe almost added a third for Tottenham on 47 minutes when he made a clever turn inside the Charlton half and fired a dipping shot just over the crossbar.

But Malbranque started to re-discover his best form following his summer move from Fulham when he added a third in spectacular style on 56 minutes.

Lennon's ball picked out Berbatov who flicked the ball into Malbranque, who chested the ball down and then volleyed the ball past Carson.

Defoe then added a fourth on 64 minutes after Bryan Hughes was robbed by Lennon midway inside the Charlton half.

The England winger played a delicate through ball into the path of Defoe who fired a superb drive past the Addicks keeper into the roof of the net.

Berbatov completed the rout for Tottenham on 66 minutes when he notched a fifth for the home side.

Robinson threw the ball out to the former Bayer Leverkusen forward, who raced into the Charlton half and powered past Faye and El Karkouri, before striking the ball past Carson to make it an afternoon to remember for the home fans.
