Andy Reid went from sinner to saint as last year's quarter finalists Charlton overcame a lively Swindon at the County Ground.

Ireland winger Reid had missed a sitter at the end of the first-half before scoring from the spot to ensure a comfortable passge for the Addicks into the second round.

Ex-Newcastle midfielder Darren Ambrose slammed in the opener on 52 minutes after Marcus Bent nodded a Chris Powell cross into his path.

Powell had a torrid first-half but produced a moment of magic with a neatly timed cross after bursting down the left.

Ten minutes later Swindon captain Hasney Aljofree hacked down Charlton new boy Izale McLeod in the penalty box and Reid converted the resulting spot kick.

Referee Woolmer instructed the Irishman to re-take the penalty after the Charlton players encroached the area but the Charlton skipper held his nerve and coolly placed the ball in the bottom right-hand corner.

Alan Pardew's men had survived an early scare when Lee Peacock chipped Nicky Weaver, only to see summer signing Yassin Moutaouakil clear off the line.

Swindon went close again when Craig Easton shaved the crossbar with a 25-yard thunderbolt which caught ex-Man City keeper Weaver by surprise.

The newly promoted Robins had a enjoyed a good start to life in League One at the weeken and they looked on course to spring a surprise here.

Charlton, who wasted chances at home to Scunthorpe on Saturday, seemed out of sorts with Robins winger Christian Roberts running veteran Chris Powell ragged in the first-half.

Not until after the half-hour did Bent and McLeod first test Petr Brezovan in the Swindon goal.

On the stroke of half-time Reid missed the chance of the match though as he chipped a Lloyd Sam centre over the crossbar from six yards, before turning his and Charlton's performance around in the second-half.
