Gonzalo Sorondo failed to shake off a foot injury so Hermann Hreidarsson reverted back to centre-back alongside Jonathan Fortune with Chris Powell, slotting in on the left of defence.

Danny Murphy’s suspension resulted in a number of switches in midfield. Dennis Rommedahl returned to the right hand side of midfield with Radostin Kishishev switching inside to partner Matt Holland.

West Ham exerted plenty of early pressure. When Myhre came for and missed a corner Reo-Coker’s a shot from the edge of the box was cleared off the line by Hreidarsson.

Indeed when Charlton scored in the 21st minute it was totally against the run of play. With virtually their first attack of the game, Bent did well to veer away from Etherington before crossing the ball from the goal line low and into the path of Bartlett who got on the end of it at the far post.

The hosts went on to end the half strongly and almost increased their lead. First Rommedahl found Bartlett in the middle but Carroll’s legs blocked the shot. Then Hayden Mullins flung himself in the way of Holland’s goalbound effort after he had picked up a loose ball.

In the second half, the Hammers' efforts rather faded away while Charlton carried the more attacking threat and took control of the game.

As the visitors switched off altogether momentarily in the 62nd minute, Bartlett retrieved the ball in the Hammers box and picked Powell out on the left.

The full back sent in a terrific curling cross, which Bent collected in front of Konchesky, unleashing a header past Carroll.

At 2-0, Kevin Lisbie replaced Bartlett in the closing stages.
