Charlton have never got beyond the fourth round of the competition, a dismal record which they were hoping to improve on against their Premiership rivals in the first match between the two clubs for four years.

They got off to the perfect start with former Palace player Hermann Hreidarsson heading them into a fifth minute lead from Danny Murphy's corner, but instead of building on their advantage they gave the initiative to a Palace side that included only one player involved in the 3-0 Premiership victory over West Brom.

Palace had all the possession and deservedly equalised five minutes before the break when Dougie Freedman scored with a sweet shot after the ball ricocheted to him off a Charlton player.

Form their only other chance of the half, Addicks midfielder Matt Holland headed wide from a good position.

The second half started in similar vein with Palace dominating the play and it was no surprise when Sandor Torghelle put them in front after he got behind the Charlton defence to latch on to a through pass, but Torghelle blotted his copy book on 71 minutes when got sent off for a second bookable offence for diving.

Palace goalkeeper Julian Speroni made two great saves to tip over two more excellent headers from Hreidarsson as Charlton battled to get back into the game, but the visitors deservedly held on to go through to the next round.
