Charlton were the better side in the first half when Darren Bent had three notable efforts. However, while Aston Villa were on top in the second, he found himself starved of service.

Charlton starting line-up: No changes other than keeper Stephan Anderson returning on the bench in place of Randolph.

Alan Curbishley: "We couldn’t capitalise on having home advantage today but in the end I think a draw was a fair result."

"I thought we had the better of the first half but we needed to score. They got stronger in the second and I was grateful for my defence that they kept another clean sheet."

"On paper it was a tough encounter, dogged if you like. The conditions didn't help - it was very windy and the pitch was quite dry and bobbly. That made it into a frustrating game for everybody."

"I also think the game on Wednesday took a bit out of us because there were some tired legs out there near the end."

David O’Leary (AVFC): "I thought we coped well with their power up front."
