Charlton slipped to a fourth successive Premiership defeat at Villa Park on Saturday. It was only Charlton's second defeat away from home but there was rarely any sign of them changing their recent form.

Perhaps with Wednesday's Carling Cup clash with Blackburn Rovers in mind, Danny Murphy made way for Matt Holland as boss Curbishley plumped for two changes from last week's defeat against Manchester United.

Danish flanker Rommedahl, who didn't even make the bench, was replaced by Jerome Thomas who operated on the left with Darren Ambrose switching to the right-hand side.

They operated a negative formation with Darren Bent the only forward although Curbishley made a change at the break, sending on Lisbie for Ambrose and switching to a 4-4-2 formation.

Villa were unchanged with Kevin Phillips and Milan Baros supplying the goal threat up front.

With the Addicks showing little ambition the game struggled to come alive, although Bent produced one anxious moment just before half-time when Alexei Smertin put Wilfred Bouma into a panic situation.

Forceful play from Alexei Smertin saw the Russian evade several challenges to move into the box.

The ball eventually broke to Bent and the striker steered his shot agonisingly wide of the left upright.

Villa's quick response resulted in some supreme skill from Phillips who plucked a high ball out of the air and delivered an inch-perfect pull-back for Baros only for the Czech striker’s sweet shot to be saved by Andersen’s brilliant reactions saving with his legs.

The Charlton keeper was in action again seconds later beating out a James Milner shot and then punching away from the on-loan youngster.

Villa continued to launch a series of attacks on the beleaguered Charlton goal but the Londoners held out, often thanks to good fortune and Charlton appeared to be heading for a point as Villa struggled to penetrate their defence..

They were also assisted by referee Mark Clattenburg who turned down the home claims for a penalty, when Baros plunged theatrically to the turf from a challenge by Radostin Kishishev on 57 minutes.

The Addicks' goal enjoyed a charmed life and Ridgewell, who had joined the Villa frontline on a forward raid, then came in handy for the Addicks twice blocking shots from Phillips and Barry in rapid succession as the home crowd finally sprung to life.

The visitors ran out of luck in the 69th minute when Villa clinched the points soon after Curbishley had called for Murphy, sending on the midfielder for Kishishev.

Baros smashed a shot against the bar from close range when it looked easier to score but the ball rebounded to Davis on the edge of the area who took a touch before firing past Andersen into the far corner.

That was enough to earn the home side the spoils as the Addicks miserable month continued.
