After their goalless meeting at The Valley, this tie was the diametric opposite; three goals peppered either half.

Egged on by more than 5,000 raucous supporters, Charlton Athletic were willing and daring but Middlesbrough progressed to the semi-finals of the FA Cup in a spellbinding evening of entertainment and endeavour.

Against the run of play, the home side grasped the lead through Fabio Rochemback. Charlton did not endure an agonising wait for their adventure to be rewarded, but Bryan Hughes only brought parity in the thirteenth minute.

Half-time arrived with Steve McClaren's side in a position of strength, if not quite dominance. Any Middlesbrough anxiety was lifted when the superb Mark Viduka shot home.
