Young: We need to rediscover Charlton bond

Luke Young revealed in The Daily Telegraph how he and other senior squad members instigated a players-only meeting this week to try and alleviate the defensive errors that have cost Charlton in their past six matches.

"The players have had a meeting this week and we've discussed a few things that we felt we needed to talk about among ourselves It was me, Chris Powell and Danny Murphy who called the meeting. Everybody chipped in and everyone discussed the points that they wanted to bring up. It was just a players' meeting; we just got together and had a discussion about what we felt and what we needed to do. It was a positive meeting and some good points came out of it."

The embarrassment of a 5-2 home defeat by Manchester City last Sunday was also the team's sixth straight-defeat in all competitions - Charlton haven't earned a point since the end of October and are out of the Carling Cup.

The right-back added: "The problem we've had in some of the games is that when we've got in front we've gone on and tried to get the third or the fourth goal when maybe we should have shut up shop a little bit and defended a bit more as a side. We're a bit more gung-ho when we get in front, we want to go and score more goals. I think that's been one of our problems and we've been hit at the back a few times due to that. The manager's tried to refresh the squad and we've got more exciting, flair players than we've had before, but perhaps we're not as defensive-minded as we have been and I think that's what we need to get back to. We need to try to instil into some of the players that have come in this summer that this is the way Charlton play and we all need to know what we're doing. It's easy to point at the defence when goals go in but I think as a team we're not defending as an XI out there. Fingers do get pointed and there were a few errors that probably would not have happened if the run hadn't been so bad as it is at the moment. We need to get back to defending as a side, and as a back four we also know that we need to defend better than we have been."
