Young reflects on England chance

He told News Shopper: "I'm really enjoying my football at the moment. Eriksson picked me ahead of a few other very good players and that has given me a lot of confidence. Obviously I play right-back for Charlton week-in, week-out, and I think it might have swung it in my favour.

"Gary Neville is a great player and he is England's number two but if I'm in the squad I want to do the best I can and put some pressure on him. It's been great for me to get my chance with England and I was delighted to be involved and to help the team qualify for the World Cup."

Young made his fifth consecutive start after standing in for Neville in four important qualifiers. Saturday's opponents Argentina were a class above the rest which made England's victory all the more gratifying.

"In my time playing for England, Argentina were by far the best team I've come up against. The time they had on the ball and the quality they showed, especially in the first 20 minutes, was superb. They really started the game well.

"Technically they are a very good side and although Riquelme was their main threat, they were an all-round great team and justified their high ranking in the world."
