Middlesbrough boss Gordon Strachan has revealed the club are close to completing the deal for Charlton Athletic captain Nicky Bailey.Bailey has been on Teesside to undergo a medical at the club's Rockcliffe Park training ground and Strachan is keen to get the player on-board.

"He's fine and he will sign in the next couple of days, which is great," Strachan told BBC Look North.

"He's got things we need, drive, determination and he can score goals."

Bailey, who had been linked to Norwich and Celtic, will cost Boro a fee in the region of £1.4m.

He made 95 appearances for the Addicks after joining from Southend in August 2008.

But his final kick in a Charlton shirt was a crucial missed penalty in the play-off semi-final against Swindon.

No-one is happy that he is leaving, but balancing the books is what we have to do

The former Sutton United and Barnet midfielder made a real impression at The Valley with his energetic displays and knack of grabbing important goals.

However, his departure looks to have been sealed after the cash-strapped Addicks, who were relegated from the Championship at the end of the 2008-09 season, failed to secure an instant return to English football's second tier.

Highly-rated midfielder Jonjo Shelvey departed Charlton for Liverpool before the end of the season, while the club have also let six players leave.

Bailey was voted into the League One team of the year by his fellow professionals alongside Charlton full-back Frazer Richardson.
