The Uruguay international on loan from Inter Milan fractured a foot in the Premiership game against Arsenal in his first league start.
"He's had a disaster. He couldn't play the first three games of the season because of suspension then picked up an injury here, an injury there. He played against Hartlepool United in the Carling Cup, then the next time we saw him after that was against Arsenal on Boxing Day and then he got injured again," said Alan Curbishley.
