The Sunday Mirror quoted Peter Cowgill, executive chairman of the John David Group, which recently bought all:sport after it went into administration, under JD Sports brand name.

He said: "As things stand, legally there is no obligation to make any payments to Charlton as that was a contract taken out with all:sport. But we recognise Charlton are flying high at the moment and that all:sport appear to be getting good exposure from that. As far as we are concerned, we are reviewing all the contractual obligations of all:sport."

Peter Varney, Charlton's chief executive, said: "While I can confirm that we are still attempting to resolve this matter with both all:sports and JD Sports, I cannot make any further comment at this stage."

Only a fortnight ago Addicks boss Alan Curbishley revealed to the local press he and chairman had sat down and discussed the possibility of dipping into the coffers following a recent run of poor results.
