The Addicks were two up inside ten minutes with Madjid Bougherra and Luke Varney scoring.

Zheng Zhi completed the rout with two goals after Ben Burgess' cracking 25-yard strike gave the Tangerines a lifeline.

Boss Pardew was pleased with Zhi's performance but singled out Varney for special praise, after his best game for the Addicks since signing from Crewe in the summer.

"When you bring players up a division you have to bear with them, but you can't fault Varney for his efforts and he was excellent today' Pardew said.

"He's beginning to look very comfortable in a Charlton shirt.

"And with the transfer window open I almost wish Zheng Zhi would stop scoring so many" he added.
