Myrhe holds his hand up

In between goalless encounters at home where the Addicks have not won in the league this year, goalkeeper Thomas Myrhe spoiled West Ham striker Teddy Sheringham's 40th birthday celebrations at Upton Park by keeping the veteran out last week when the two sides met.

One of England's Euro ‘96 stars, Sheringham said: "It came to me perfectly, but the goalkeeper made a good reaction save. It had been a good day with the celebrations but if that one had gone in it would have made it the perfect day."

Charlton's Norwegian stopper has come into the side since Christmas, a change that has coincided dramatically with the side's recovery from a terrible patch at the end of last year.

Myrhe said: "It was important to turn things around starting with the defensive side. We had to get a foundation of clean sheets."

But while he's kept clean sheets goals at the other end have become a bit of a rarity otherwise Alan Curbishley's side would already be in the semi-finals of the FA Cup, and considerably higher up the league. He joked: "I think I've killed their confidence in training. I've let one or two in just to give them a boost."
