Supporters welcomed Marcus Bent a fortnight ago, but were riling at Danny Murphy’s exit to Tottenham on deadline day.
Charlton recouped the fee they paid for Bent with Murphy's transfer across town.
Murray said: "The deal was finally signed off at 10 minutes to midnight, and that creates a number of difficulties in trying to bring anyone in. We had to take a decision whether to just bring someone in because we wanted to say we'd made another signing."
