Defensive abyss

From Champions League to Championship form, Charlton have now lost six on the bounce since beating Chelsea in the Carling Cup, reported The Sun.

After the 5-2 defeat against Manchester City at The Valley yesterday, Alan Curbishley said: "Whatever we do defensively at the moment doesn't work. The way we are setting about defending is just unbelievable – it’s a catalogue of disasters. We don't remotely look like we're going to keep a clean sheet at the moment. I think the way we played at the start of the season glossed over our defensive problems, but now we are losing they are there for all to see."

But Curbishley saved his greatest criticism for the midfield, even though poor play by defensive trio Chris Perry, Hermann Hreidarsson and Jonathan Spector each helped City to score.

He told The Guardian: "I have players who don't want to track, put their foot in, get the right side of their men or offer the back four any protection."
