Curbs warns no players place in the side is safe

The changes Alan Curbishley has already made, which included leaving midfielder Danny Murphy on the bench and dropping winger Dennis Rommedahl altogether at Aston Villa on Saturday, failed to have the desired effect, with Charlton losing again, wrote Kieran Daley in The Independent.

"I can't have the last two performances, I can't. Since the Blackburn game (in the Premiership), there have been five changes to the team, and there may well be again tonight. Part and parcel of having a squad strong enough is no one feels safe."

"One or two of them have gone off the boil, one or two of them have not been playing as well as they should be, and one or two of them have perhaps been trying a bit too hard. It is up to me to try to get them back on track. But once they cross that line, it is all about them. It is about making as many right decisions as you can, and at the moment we are making too many wrong ones and it is not happening for us."

"It is not always the goalkeeper's fault - he is always an easy target. You need to have a look at what is going on in front of him, at the midfield and the back four. I think our poor performances have been isolated - overall I'd say we've been OK. We have to start winning games at home, that's the main thing, but the trick is to stop it becoming a rut.

"It would be dreadful to think we could go to Stamford Bridge (in the third round) and get that result and then not be able to follow it up with a home win. When we went on that winning run away from home I knew it had to end sooner or later but we have to get back on track. In the same way I'm convinced that our home form will turn around because it has to.

"By Sunday we will know a lot. We could be in the fifth round of the Carling Cup and back up among it in the league, but we could also be out of the cup and down in the bottom half of the table."
