Curbs reaction to two consecutive defeats

After Charlton lost 1-0 at home to Bolton last weekend Addicks boss Alan Curbishley told The Mercury: "We didn't really get going, but maybe that was down to the fact that Bolton never let us play.

"If you look at the five midfield players, some of the teams we are up against are a lot bigger and stronger. However, when our midfielders get on the ball, like they did away at Portsmouth, it counts in our favour. When it goes the other way, it's a bit difficult for us.

"Every team has to sit down and work out what strengths they have, and play to them. Maybe the way we play, we might get bullied out of games sometimes. The Premiership has got different, contrasting styles and attitudes in it - and that is what makes it so compelling. You have to adapt."

Then after the crushing defeat away at Blackburn yesterday he was more critical of his side: "We never looked comfortable and in all areas we didn't do enough defensively to stop Blackburn.

"There are some things that went on that have no place in our side and that's something I have to eradicate. It happened in the first 25 minutes at Portsmouth as well and is something we have to work on. It's defensive stuff like putting your foot in every now and again and making sure you get in the right areas.

"It's not all about tackling, you've got to want the ball as well. We just never gave ourselves any kind of defensive base. I'm not just talking about back four either, I'm talking about others out there who didn't hold their end up on the defensive side. We just couldn't get going so our passing and attacking play was affected."
