He joins after boss Phil Parkinson reacted quickly to the departure of Graeme Murty, who has returned to Reading after suffering a calf injury in the 1-1 draw with Swansea on Saturday.

Butterfield has been a regular feature in Neil Warnock's Eagles side, making 30 appearances in the Championship including last weekend's 2-0 defeat at Watford.

He goes straight into the squad for tonight's massive game against Doncaster at The Valley and is expected to start alongside his former Palace team-mates Mark Hudson and Darren Ward.
