Big step towards safety

Luke Young’s first goal since the start of last season and a Darren Bent penalty combined in the first half to seal three points and move Charlton to within a point and with a game in hand over Sunday's opponents Manchester City.

Charlton boss Alan Curbishley said: "To lose 3-1 at Spurs on Sunday was disappointing, particularly as we have tightened up at the back at home."

Chris Powell lost his place in the side to Jonathan Spector, presumably for his part in Tottenham’s second goal last Sunday. Defenders Chris Perry and Talal El Karkouri also made their first Premiership appearances of 2006.

Curbishley added: "Liverpool had a lot of play in midfield but our defence held out ever so well — and then we got the goals at a vital time. In the end, I thought we were comfortable winners."
