Addicks v Hammers Premiership History Part 2

Last updated : 20 February 2007 By Paul Crisp
The Addicks were back in the big time after winning the Division 1 (now known as the Championship) title in 2000.

The Sky cameras were at The Valley on a cold monday night, as Alan Curbishley's men looked to get revenge on The Irons, after being on the recieving end of a 5-0 thumping at Upton Park on Boxing Day.

Charlton started brightly and took an early lead, when South African striker Shaun Bartlett slotted home from a Paul Konchesky pass after just seven minutes.

This was the catalyst though for an excellent West Ham performance, in which their endless pressure was rewarded with an equaliser fifteen minutes from time.

Paolo Di Canio had space and time on the edge of the area, and keeper Dean Kiely could do nothing as the ball flew past his outstretched hand, and into the top corner of the net.

The game ended in a 1-1 draw, which meant that West Ham had gone forty-three years without a win at The Valley. As for the West Ham goalscorer, Di Canio became familiar with winning at The Valley, when he signed in 2003 and was a key player in Charlton's highest ever Premiership finish of seventh.

Tomorrow, we go back to November 2001, when the Sky cameras were in attendance again to witness one hell of a game...
