Afterwards, both managers pinpointed Charlton's desire to claim a place in the semi-finals at the first time of asking.

Alan Curbishley said: "We really wanted to try and win it but it wasn't to be."

Steve McClaren, whose Boro side hopes to lift the UEFA Cup this season, agreed with Curbs: "Charlton hit us with everything. They got their game plan right and they set about us."
