The centre-half was a key part of Palace's push for promotion, which was ended by Bristol City in the play-offs.

And with the Eagles skipper out of contract, Addicks boss Alan Pardew was quick to snap him on a free transfer.

Pardew said, "Unfortunately for us, Mark was brilliant for Palace last season and I'm absolutely overjoyed with his signing. He's a player I have admired for a long time".

"I think he will be a fantastic player for us, not only on the playing field but off the pitch as well.

"He is a strong character and represents everything that is good about professional football, and I look forward to working with him and seeing him in our team next season."
